Yes, you can switch from a Student visa to a Skilled Worker visa before your course ends, but there are specific conditions that must be met.

Eligibility to switch in-country:

You can apply to switch from a Student visa to a Skilled Worker visa from within the UK provided you meet all of the standard Skilled Worker visa requirements. The key requirements are:

1. You must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from a Home Office licensed sponsor employer.
2. The job must be at the appropriate skill level, which is RQF level 3 or above.
3. You must meet the salary threshold, which is currently the higher of the going rate for the occupation or the general salary threshold (£38,700 per year as of April 2024, though there are some exceptions and lower rates for certain groups including new entrants).
4. You must meet the English language requirement, which as a Student visa holder you will almost certainly already satisfy.

Timing:

There is no requirement to wait until your course finishes before applying. You can apply while your Student visa is still valid, even if your course is ongoing. However, you should be aware of a few practical points.

Your student sponsor (your university or college) may need to be informed, and depending on your course terms, withdrawing early or reducing attendance could have consequences for your academic record or any student finance.

Your new Skilled Worker visa will not normally start until it is granted, so you remain on your Student visa conditions until then.

New entrant salary rates:

If you are switching before or shortly after completing your course, you may qualify as a “new entrant” to the labour market. This can reduce the salary threshold you need to meet. You generally qualify as a new entrant if you are under 26 at the date of application, or are switching from a Student visa. The new entrant rate is 70 per cent of the going rate for the occupation, though you must still meet the general minimum salary floor for new entrants.

Practical considerations:

If you are close to finishing your course, it may make sense to complete it if possible, particularly if the qualification would strengthen your position or your employer is content to wait. However, there is no legal obligation to finish.

If your Student visa would expire before a Skilled Worker application is decided, make sure you apply before the expiry date. Once a valid in-time application is made, you benefit from what is known as section 3C leave, meaning your existing leave is extended on the same conditions until the new application is decided.

Check your Certificate of Sponsorship carefully before applying, as errors or mismatches between the CoS details and your application are a common cause of refusal.
