Graduate visa application from abroad

Short answer

No. You cannot apply for a Graduate visa from outside the UK. One of the core eligibility requirements is that you must physically be in the UK both when you apply and while your application is being decided.

The rule and why it applies

The Graduate route is designed as a switch from inside the UK for people who have completed an eligible course here on a Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa. The Immigration Rules (Appendix Graduate) and the official GOV.UK guidance both make clear that you must be in the UK when you apply. There is no entry clearance version of this visa that can be applied for from abroad.

In addition, once you have submitted the application, you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you receive a decision. If you leave that Common Travel Area before a decision is made, your application will be treated as withdrawn.

Other key conditions to check

Even from inside the UK, you can only apply if all of the following are true:

1. You currently hold a Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa.

2. You studied an eligible UK qualification (a bachelor’s degree, a postgraduate degree, or another eligible course) for the required minimum period on that visa.

3. Your education provider (the licensed student sponsor) has notified the Home Office that you have successfully completed the course. You do not need to wait until graduation or receipt of your certificate.

4. You apply before your existing Student or Tier 4 visa expires.

What this means in practice

If you have already left the UK, or your Student visa has already expired, you are not able to make a Graduate visa application. In that situation you would need to consider a different route into the UK, for example a Skilled Worker visa if you have a sponsoring employer, and that application would be made as an entry clearance application from outside the UK.

If you are currently in the UK on a valid Student visa and are only planning a short trip abroad, the safest approach is to submit the Graduate application first and then not travel outside the Common Travel Area until you have the decision, or to complete any essential travel and return before you apply.
