Correcting Student visa application error

Question
What can I do if I made a mistake on my Student visa application or uploaded the wrong document?

The answer depends heavily on which stage your application has reached, because the options narrow considerably once you have paid, submitted, and especially once a decision has been made. I have set out the main scenarios below.

If you have not yet submitted

Before you press submit and pay, the online form lets you review everything. On the final “Check your answers” page you can use the Change, Add and Remove buttons against each question to correct any wrong answer, and you can replace documents you have selected before finalising. This is the easiest point to fix a mistake, so review every section carefully, particularly your personal details, passport number, course and CAS details, financial figures and dates.

If you have submitted but not yet uploaded or attended your appointment

After you submit and pay, you normally still have a separate document-upload stage. Depending on how you are proving your identity, this is either through the UK Immigration: ID Check app linked to your UKVI account, or by uploading to your TLScontact or UKVCAS (Sopra Steria) account before a biometric appointment. At this stage you can usually still upload the correct document in place of the wrong one, or add a missing document, because the caseworker has not yet started reviewing the file. If you uploaded the wrong file, upload the correct version and, if the system allows, remove the incorrect one. Take paper copies of all required documents to any in-person appointment in case there are technical problems and something needs uploading again.

If you have submitted and uploaded but no decision has been made

If the application is now with UK Visas and Immigration and you realise there is an error or a wrong document, you should contact UKVI as soon as possible rather than waiting. The route depends on where you applied:

For applications made from outside the UK, contact UKVI through the commercial partner handling overseas applications (this is usually the contact centre linked to your visa application centre, for example the international enquiry service).

For applications made from inside the UK, contact UKVI directly through the official contact channels on GOV.UK.

Explain clearly what the mistake is, give your application or GWF/UAN reference, and ask whether you can submit a correction or the correct document. Caseworkers often send a request for further information or clarification where a document is missing or unclear, and responding promptly to any such request is important. If your university has an international student advice team, tell them straight away, because they deal with UKVI frequently and can often advise on the correct channel and wording.

The distinction between an innocent mistake and a false representation

This matters a great deal. A genuine, honest error such as uploading the wrong bank statement, mistyping a passport number, or selecting the wrong document is not the same as making a false representation. Under the Immigration Rules an application can be refused, and in serious cases a person can be found to have used deception, where false information or false documents are submitted dishonestly. An honest mistake that you promptly correct or explain is very different from concealment or fabrication.

Because of this, the safest approach is to correct the error proactively and transparently. Volunteering a correction and an explanation reduces the risk that a caseworker treats an inconsistency as something more serious. Do not, however, try to substitute a document in a way that changes the substance of your eligibility (for example, presenting different finances) without being open about what has happened, as this can create exactly the impression you want to avoid.

If a decision has already been made

Once a decision is issued your options change:

1. If the application was refused because of the mistake or missing document, you generally cannot simply amend the old application. In most cases you would need to make a fresh application with the correct information and documents, paying the fees again. Check the refusal notice carefully, because it will state the specific reason and whether any review or appeal right applies. Most Student visa refusals do not carry a right of appeal but may allow an administrative review where the decision contains a caseworker error.

2. If the visa or eVisa has been granted but contains an error, for example wrong work-hour conditions, an incorrect expiry date, or a wrong personal detail, you should report the error to UKVI as soon as possible so it can be corrected. Do not travel or rely on incorrect conditions without getting them fixed. Your university student advice service can help you report an eVisa error.

Administrative review where the error was the caseworker’s

If you believe the refusal resulted from a Home Office caseworker error rather than your own mistake, administrative review is the route to challenge it, and there are strict deadlines to request it (typically a short number of days from the decision, set out in the refusal notice). Administrative review is not a way to submit new evidence you forgot to include; it is limited to correcting case-working errors, so it will not usually help if the problem was that you uploaded the wrong document yourself.

Practical next steps

1. Identify exactly which stage you are at: not submitted, submitted but pre-decision, or decided.

2. If pre-decision, gather the correct document now and contact the relevant UKVI or commercial-partner channel promptly, quoting your reference, to ask how to submit the correction.

3. Contact your university’s international student advice team immediately, as they are experienced with these situations and can confirm the correct channel and help with wording.

4. Keep a dated record of every contact with UKVI, TLScontact or UKVCAS, including screenshots and reference numbers.

5. If you receive a refusal, read the reason and the deadline for any administrative review carefully before deciding whether to seek a review or make a fresh application.

Key facts that would sharpen this advice

To give you a more precise answer it would help to know whether you applied from inside or outside the UK, whether you have already submitted and paid, whether you have uploaded documents or attended a biometric appointment, whether a decision has been issued, and exactly what the mistake was (a typed answer versus a wrong document, and whether it affects your eligibility such as finances or your CAS). The urgency and the correct channel differ significantly between these situations.
